Paul Giamatti gets close to a dream role.
Can you ever get enough Paul Giamatti? No, of course not. How about Giamatti as the bad guy in a superhero movie? Serve me some up now.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Giamatti is in talks to play The Rhino in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Jamie Foxx has already been cast as the villain Electro. Usually I would state my warning about multiple villains ruining the superhero movie, but, well, it’s Paul Giamatti, so he blows up all the rules.
THR says this about the character:
The Rhino first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #41 in 1966 as a thug from a Soviet Block country who wore a superhuman suit that made him invulnerable while giving him super-strength and super-speed. It also had a deadly horn on top.
In 2011, Giamatti expressed affection for the character to Showbiz Spy:
“I thought Rhino was the greatest thing when I was a little kid,” says Paul. “It was a guy who was basically in this rhinoceros outfit and I always thought, ‘Why don’t they have The Rhino in one of their movies,’ but maybe The Rhino wasn’t that big of a deal for anybody but me.
“If they ever go with The Rhino I would be ready and waiting.”
Good for him for loving the anti-hero.
Meanwhile, there’s word that Felicity Jones is in talks for an unnamed role. Emma Stone and Shailene Woodley are already cast as Spider-Man’s two main love interests, Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson. Maybe Jones will be playing a villain’s associate. Lucky her.
Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Dane DeHaan plays Harry Osborn. Marc Webb directs. The movie is set to be released on May 2, 2014. Production is supposed to begin in February.
