In case you’ve missed the whole caboodle, Joaquin Phoenix claims to have retired from being an actor and is venturing into a new career as a rapper. No, I’m not smoking something I shouldn’t be, and no, it isn’t April Fools Day. Strangely enough, some people don’t quite believe Phoenix is being serious.
If leaving acting to move into the world of hip-hop isn’t weird enough, Phoenix has made it worse by displaying some very strange behavior recently. First there was his appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, and then he jumped into the crowd at a gig and fought with an alleged heckler. Both videos are embedded below for your pleasure.

Phoenix’ co-star in what he suggests is his last movie, Gwyneth Paltrow, isn’t falling for the whole thing, and has told the press of her doubts that it’s all on the level. She said:
“I’m not a hundred percent sure that that’s really going to be the case. I think that there might be some other explanation or something going on.
“I’m not quite sure what, but I can’t believe that he’s really going to quit forever to become a rapper. It seems odd.”
“I think there may be something going on, I’m not sure what, I don’t know. I mean did you see him on Letterman? It was like a performance, it was so brilliant. I don’t know what he is doing, maybe it is like a big performance art thing.”
“He had fun making up his rap in the car, but I’m not sure that he is a true hip-hop artist.”
It does seem very bizarre, with the change of career, long beard and straggly hair, and unusual behavior. Either Phoenix has gone slightly mad or it’s part of an art project or something. Either way, it’s quite fun to watch someone ruin their career in the space of a few months.
