Nighy Steps Into Harry Potter Finale

Bill Nighy sees Harry Potter in his future.

It must be tough to be a British actor who didn’t make it into the Lord of the Rings movies or any of the Harry Potter movies so far. I mean, how do you even explain that? There are so many of them, it’s almost an insult not to have been invited, isn’t it?

Apparently Bill Nighy has made some comments about his astonishing absence from the Harry Potter movies, and how he’s the only British actor who hasn’t been in them. Well, if those were hints to the producers, they worked. Nighy told Britain’s The Independent (via ComingSoon):

“I don’t think I’m allowed to say it but I’m going to be in the next Harry Potter film. I won’t say which character, but he’s a goodie. I just got the gig.”

Has he read the books? “Not yet, but I will!” he says. “It’s rather like being in a Shakespeare that way, you know?”

Exactly!! Except Shakespeare’s shorter.

The Leaky Cauldron apparently first reported this story a few weeks ago. They believe Nighy will be playing “Rufus Scrimgeour, a veteran Auror in the Ministry of Magic who spends most of his time fighting Dark Wizards.” HP fans, speculate on your own about whether this is good casting or not; all I can say is that Nighy is a more than capable actor who can steal a scene with the best of them.

The first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” will be released on November 19, 2010, and the second half on July 15, 2011.
