Drew Barrymore in one of her many incarnations.
The Hollywood Reporter brings word that New Line has bought the rights toLiz Tuccillo’s novel How to be Single for Flower Films. Flower team Nancy Juvonen and Drew Barrymore will produce, Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn will adapt.
This is pretty much a return engagement for all parties–Silverstein and Kohn adapted He’s Just Not that Into You, the nonfiction book Tuccillo co-wrote with Greg Behrendt. Juvonen and Barrymore produced that as well.
Let me give you THR’s rundown of the plot of Single, as I’m sure I would get it wrong because I am bored just by the title of this book (though apparently it’s a bestseller, so I wouldn’t go by me on this one):
While “Into You” was a non-fiction how-to look at relationships, “Single” is Tuccillo’s fiction debut. It follow the dating lives of five single New York women, one of whom, the narrator, is writing a book about how bachelorettes across the world manage. The woman embarks on a trip around the world for the book and gets involved in an international affair, while her four friends duke it out on the New York dating scene.
That sounds more complicated than necessary, but again, I don’t seem to be the target audience.
Since Barrymore is the one with the movie star name, we’ll speculate on her involvement? Will she star? Or direct (she’s currently working on her directorial debut, Whip It, starring Ellen Page)? I’m betting she ends up in the movie, not behind the camera.
