Neve-r Again: Campbell Character Killed for “Scream 4″?

Neve Campbell doesn’t need to “Scream.”

In June, Kevin Williamson, trying to prove either that you can go home again or that there are no second acts in American lives, revealed that he was working on a sequel to the “Scream” horror franchise he created. “Scream 4,” let’s call it. Some original cast members expressed interest in returning to their roles (it’s not like David Arquette is busy anyway), and director Wes Craven didn’t shut the door on returning to the series. One problem, though, was that Neve Campbell, who starred in the films as Sidney Prescott made it clear that she had no interest in reprising her role.

So what is Williamson to do? He had this to say to MTV at Comic Con:

“It’s gonna sort of involve our returning characters—the only characters left alive,” he said. “We’ve got Courtney Cox and David Arquette returning.”

The implication, of course, is that Sid died at some point after the end of “Scream 3.” As Williamson told us, the fourth film is most definitely a sequel—not a series reboot—and it “picks up after ‘Scream 3’—ten years later.”

It seems like killing her off is the best solution–let’s face it, Campbell isn’t coming back, so why leave the door open? the only question is how should she die? Sure, you could have her meet the one serial killer she couldn’t evade (you know, the one who isn’t an idiot or coward). But wouldn’t it be so much better to have it revealed that she died in some enormously prosaic way? How about she slips on a banana peel? Chokes on a piece of food in a restaurant? Drinks milk that she let go sour (can you die from that? if you drink enough?)? Could she die from a common cold? Have a heart attack during a horror film festival? All of these would be much more enertaining than anything that would be from the grotesque realm of horror movies.
