You may think Michael Moore is a fat, bearded, leftist do-gooder who thinks he is always right. Hell, I do. But even I cannot fault the man for eschewing a theatrical release guaranteed to add to his bank balance in favour of releasing his new film on the Internet for free. Radiohead may have done it first but Moore is doing it better.
Oh sure, it’s clearly being done in order to get Michael Moore some publicity in the months leading up to the US Presidential Election, and remember, he has got a book out right now, and sure, the film uses footage that is now our years old, but still, it’s a good idea.
Slacker Uprising, the documentary film in question, follows Michael Moore as he embarks on a 62-city tour around the US swing states in the build-up to the 2004 US Presidential Election. Moore was a big John Kerry fan but despite rallying the troops still couldn’t manage to get him elected ahead of George W. Bush.
The full film will be available to watch online (if you’re resident in the USA or Canada) on BlipTV for three weeks from September 23rd. It will then be released on DVD on October 7th although why anyone would want to buy it when they could watch it for free is beyond me.
Despite the jokes, I do actually like Michael Moore and his style of documentary. he should be applauded for this move to give his Internet-enabled fans a freebie, and hopefully persuade a few thousand more slackers to vote for Barack Obama come November.
