Michael K. Williams Up for “RoboCop”

By Kirsten Anderson Casting

Michael K. Williams may hang out with RoboCop.

If someone told you that a remake of a quirky ’80s sci-fi shoot ‘em up had one of the most intriguing casts of the year, would you be surprised? Come on, yes you would. So going with the premise that you admit to being surprised, let’s consider the case of the remake of “RoboCop” and the actors it has signed: star Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Laurie, Jackie Earle Haley, Jay Baruchel, Abby Cornish, and Jennifer Ehle. Pretty good, huh? Wait, it’s about to get better–according to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael K. Williams is in talks to join the fun.

ComingSoon summarizes Jose Padilha’s remake this way:

In the film, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

Williams would play Murphy’s partner. He is, of course, best known for  playing Omar on “The Wire.” He also is on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and is currently filming Steve McQueen’s “Twelve Years a Slave” with Chiwetal Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, and Brad Pitt.  “RoboCop” is supposed to begin filming in September.
