Mia Wasikowska Out Of “Carol,” Rooney Mara In

Rooney Mara gets to work with Cate Blanchett in "Carol."

As the title says–Deadline reports that Mia Wasikowska is no longer attached to star in “Carol,” an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novella “The Price of Salt.” No word on whether it was the actress’s decision or the production’s. Instead, Rooney Mara will play the role  Wasikowska had been slated to play. Cate Blanchett is still set to star, with Todd Haynes directing.

“Carol” is about “a burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York. Mara would play a young woman working in a department store and hoping for a better life. Blanchett would play a wife trapped in a loveless marriage who’s desperate to break free but fearful of losing her daughter in the process.” The novella was considered groundbreaking in its day because it implied that the two women might find a happy ending together and did not have them punished for their relationship.

Mara can currently be seen on screens in “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” and has “Her” from Spike Jonze out in the fall, followed by Stephen Daldry’s “Trash.”
