Whether we’re readers of Marvel comic books or not, we have all heard of characters such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and The X-Men. They have broken out of the confines of their comics to become known to the mainstream, with movies, TV series, and merchandise surrounding them.
But what of the hordes of other, lesser-known Marvel Comics characters out there? Don’t they deserve a crack at the big-time, a shot at being in the limelight? Marvel thinks they do, and so has put the call out for screenwriters eager to pen the next big comic book franchise.
Marvel has over 5,000 characters beavering away fighting or committing crimes in comics. And it wants to bring some of these less famous characters to the big screen. According to Variety, it is assembling a group of up to five writers a year to work on specific projects.
Characters mentioned in the article for possible promotion to the A-List include Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk, and Vision. the success of the Iron Man movie seems to be the catalyst for this effort, because here was a lesser-known character who enticed all and sundry to the cinema.
This seems like a good idea but there is a danger of flooding the market with movies centering on lesser known comic book characters. I hate to say it but these movies often don’t work because the audience feels no bond to the character. Let’s hope this creates more movies like Iron Man and less like Daredevil.
