The new ‘Max Payne’ movie from Twentieth Century Fox is getting nearer to being made, with the director being announced, the script being finished, and most importantly of all, a lead actor being tempted by the part.
Variety is reporting that the studio are currently negotiating with Mark Wahlberg to try and persuade him to play the “good cop gone bad” lead role in the film of the game.
The script is finished, having been written by by Beau Thorne, and the director is confirmed to be John Moore, he of ‘Behind Enemy Lines’, ‘Flight of the Phoenix’ and ‘The Omen’ fame.
If Wahlberg agrees to take the part in the film version of the violent Rockstar game, he will finish making ‘The Lovely Bones’ with director Peter Jackson, before moving on to this new project.
The original game sees our hero Max Payne come face to face with the brutal killings of his wife and daughter, which leads him, years later, on a bloody revenge to seek justice against the murderers. It is not known how much the script will deviate away from the game’s plot.
It was a cinematic title to begin with, as it drew influences from John Woo Hong Kong action flicks and ‘The Matrix’, featuring extensive use of the latter’s Bullet Time effect, so a film adaptation should work very well.
Mark Wahlberg definitely has a similar look and feel about him as the Max Payne character in the game, and I would say he’s a good choice to play the role. But, if he, or the director, messes it up, they’ll have millions of disappointed game fans baying for their blood.
