Mark Romanek Leaves “Cinderella”

Mark Romanek and Disney disagree about Cinderella.

Deadline reports that Mark Romanek is no longer directing Disney’s live action version of “Cinderella.” According to reports, Romanek and the studio disagreed over the direction of the film–Romanek wanted a darker tone and Disney did not. To which I say, it’s freakin’ Disney–what did Romanek expect? I’m surprised this hire went through in the first place.

Romanek is best known for his music videos and commercials, but has only directed a few features, notably “One Hour Photo” and “Never Let Me Go.” He dropped out of “The Wolf Man” starring Benicio Del Toro a few years ago, which was a smart move as that turned out to be a massive flop.

Disney wants to stay on schedule to shoot “Cinderella” this summer. Cate Blanchett is already in the cast as, I believe, the wicked stepmother. Casting is under way for the lead role, with names like Saiorse Ronan, Alicia Vikander, and Gabrielle Wilde rumored to be frontrunners.
