Mark Millar Shares ‘Superman’ Plans

The character of Superman is currently in limbo. The last film, Superman Returns, was a bit of blow-out, with very few people that enamored by the attempted reboot. It doesn’t look like there’ll be a second film in the current series (of one, apparently), and instead there are plans afoot for yet another reboot.
In the same way that superheros such as Batman and Iron Man have had great box office success by going back to their roots with an origin movie, so Superman could do… again. But one man has a much bigger and broader plan, and that man is the guy behind Wanted, Mark Millar.
Millar is the comic book artist responsible for Wanted, which then became a movie this summer starring Angelina Jolie. He’s been banging on about an idea for a Superman movie for a while now, and has finally revealed his big plan to Empire magazine. He said:
“It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him.”
“I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers.”
Furthermore, Millar wants the story to be an eight hour marathon split in to three films, all released a year apart from each other.
Wow, the man has vision, and I can actually see it working. Whether the studios will go for what will undoubtedly be an expensive project remains to be seen, but I’d love to see him at least pitch the idea.
