“Magneto” Prequel: Don’t Hold Your Breath

We may never get to find out who would play the young Sir Ian.
Before Marvel got into the movie business, Fox acquired the film rights to everything associated with “X-Men.” The studio seems to be determined to get every possible penny’s worth out of those rights, with an endless stew of “X-Men” related films constantly bubbling through the rumor mill.
One of these was “X-Men Origins: Magneto,” a movie about the bad guys early years. Now, though, MTV’s Splash Page says the project is, if not dead, a long way away from happening. Let’s say it’s the opposite of a priorty. And this is despite a script by David Goyer that producer Lauren Shuler Donner describes as “brilliant.” Apparently Fox is too wrapped up in a number of other “X-Men” movies: another “Wolverine” movie is on the way, so’s the “Deadpool” movie, and then there’s kids at the academy jaunt, “X-Men First Class.”
So how does Goyer feel about it? He understands:
“I tend to agree with her,” he said of Donner’s previously stated position. “[Fox is] still trying to figure out what they want to do, whether or not they’ll do a different ‘X-Men’ movie next or another ‘Wolverine’ movie next. If they want to make ‘Magneto,’ that’s awesome. In the meantime, I’m just going to move on with my other projects.”
And he’s got plenty to do–”Ghost Rider 2,” “Super Max,” and potentially another Batman movie. So don’t cry for David Goyer.
But cry for you, if you wanted to see the Magneto movie. Oh, and Sir Ian McKellen–I bet he’d have worked in a cameo.
