“Magic Mike” The Musical?

Live and onstage?

Movie and theater news!

“Magic Mike” has been receiving good reviews, had great ticket pre-sales and did smashing business with its midnight opening, taking inĀ  $2.050M from one show at midnight in 1,100 location (“Ted” also had a big midnight opening–it’s R rated weekend!). With everything looking good for the movie, what’s next? A sequel? So far no (and I mean please, no). A musical? YES.

Deadline reports that director Steven Soderbergh and star Channing Tatum will produce a stage musical version of the show which they’re hoping will arrive on Broadway in fall 2013. Reid Carolin, who wrote the movie’s script, will write the book for the show. No word yet on who will write the songs.

It seems like they would really have to work hard not to get a solid show that could run on Broadway for a decent amount of time and then have a successful life on tour and in regional theater (put it in Vegas? of course). No, they won’t have names like Tatum and Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer to help draw audiences, but there are plenty of hard working chorus boys who will fill the stripper ranks nicely.
