What’s this? A Hollywood admitting a failure? Well, I never.
Shia LaBeouf isn’t a dumb guy. He’s intelligent enough to know when he’s foisted a crap movie on the world. And he’s kind of admitted that’s what Michael Bay did with Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen. And he played his part in that.
Speaking to The Press Association at the Cannes Film Festival, where he’s promoting Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, LaBeouf said:
“When I saw the second movie, I wasn’t impressed with what we did. There were some really wild stunts in it, but the heart was gone.”
“We got lost. We tried to get bigger. It’s what happens to sequels. It’s like, how do you top the first one? You’ve got to go bigger. Mike went so big that it became too big, and I think you lost the anchor of the movie. … You lost a bit of the relationships. Unless you have those relationships, then the movie doesn’t matter. Then it’s just a bunch of robots fighting each other.”
Is it me or is that exactly what most fans of the first movie felt when they left the cinema after seeing the second? It’s almost as though LaBeouf read all those critical reviews, slowly but surely absorbed the information, and then regurgitated it a year later. But at least he’s now had the balls to come out and say it.
Realizing how poor Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is wasn’t enough to stop LaBeouf signing up for a third movie. But he’s promising a return to form for this one. The problem is, none of the components have changed, and Michael Bay is still directing. So I’m not exactly brimming with confidence at this moment in time.
