MTV met with Joseph Kosinski this week, ostensibly to talk about the recently released trailer for “Oblivion,” his movie with Tom Cruise that debuts in April. Needless to say, though, other subjects came up.
First, what does he think about having his name tossed in the “Star Wars VII” director ring by fans?
“For me, I feel like, between ‘Tron’ and ‘Oblivion,’ I’ve gotten to fulfill my ‘Star Wars’ fantasies, in a way. It’s flattering of you to mention, but like everyone else, I’m interested to see where they take it. I actually know the writer [Michael Arndt] on it very well; he’s a fantastic writer, and I think he’s perfect for the job, so I’m sure it will be a great story, and I can’t wait to see what they do with it.”
And what does he think about the job that no one seems to want?
“It is tough. I mean, whoever does it hopefully will have the freedom to put their own stamp on it and present a unique vision. Hopefully it will look and be something that no one’s expecting as the first ones were when they came out in the late ’70s. It’s a tricky challenge, but they’ve got really good people on it, so I’m sure they’ll figure something out.”
This week we also heard that there will indeed be a follow up to Kosinski’s “Tron Legacy,” with that film’s star Garrett Hedlund already committed to return. What does Kosinski have planned?
“We’ve got an idea for the next movie that’s really exciting to me. I mean, obviously, the only reason to go back would be if we could do something spectacular and really push the ideas forward that we had established in ‘Legacy.’ We have an idea and an approach and a way into it that I’m really excited about, and now it’s about execution on the level of the script…So working hard on that in the background, and hopefully that’ll all come together.
“It’s still the same plan in that ‘Tron 3′ would deliver on the promises set up at the end of ‘Legacy’ in different ways. You look at what happened in the closing scenes of ‘Legacy’; I think it sets a clear direction for what could happen in the next chapter.”
Well, if you were a “Tron Legacy” fan, then you can take that statement and begin to make your guesses about what will happen next.
