It’s looking very unlikely that Angelina Jolie is going to be back for Wanted 2, the sequel to one of my favorite movies of 2008. It appears she’s upped and left the franchise in order to be a part of Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity.
However, rather than kill the sequel off as first assumed, it looks as director Timur Bekmambetov is instead searching for a replacement. Not necessarily a like-for-like replacement, with the newcomer playing the same role, but a replacement female lead to star alongside James McAvoy.
It was reported in April that Kristen Stewart (best known as Bella Swan in the Twilight movies) could be that replacement. The rumor asserted that Stewart would play “a young, ass-kicking assassin in the Fraternity.” But nothing has been confirmed or denied, or even heard, since.
MTV recently asked Stewart about the rumors and how she felt about starring in Wanted 2. She replied:
“I mean, like, it’s weird to answer questions like this. The only two projects that I’m confirmed in now are ‘On the Road’ and ‘Breaking Dawn’ 1 and 2.”
“As long as it was good and I mean, it’s really exciting to see [that could be an opportunity]. ‘Wanted’ was a great movie, like, James McAvoy makes that movie different than most other action movies because he’s a real guy, and I feel like most action movies don’t have that. So if it had that [element], definitely. But I wouldn’t just want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie. I’m not into it.”
I would assume that she’s been approached, but nothing is yet set in stone. As I’ve said before, I’ll welcome any actress with open arms so long as Wanted 2 gets made. And actually, I think Stewart could do a good job in the role being described. It would be something very different for her, but I’d bet on her pulling it off.
