Kirsten Dunst Says Yes To ‘Spider-Man 4’

Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire

The beginning of September saw news reach us that not only would there definitely be a Spider-Man 4, there would also be a Spider-Man 5, with both films being produced back to back so as to keep the (still) high budgets down. While Sony Pictures had been considering other actors to play Spidey, Tobey Maguire eventually signed on the dotted line, along with director Sam Raimi.

At the time, there was still a question mark over whether Kirsten Dunst would be back to play Mary Jane Watson. The character was always going to be written in, being Spidey’s love interest and all that, but Dunst hadn’t yet committed. But now she has, kinda.

During promotion for her current film, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, with Simon Pegg, MTV News asked her about the forthcoming Spider-Man films. Her response was mixed to say the least:

“I’m in! I’m not saying anything, I know there’s rumors…”

Well what the hell does that mean? Probably that she’s said yes, or at least made the decision in her head to go back to the franchise that made her a household name, but that the time for an official announcement hasn’t quite arrived. Or she could just have multiple personality disorder.

The thing is, as great as I think Dunst is in the Spider-Man films, she’s not an essential part of the cast in the same way Maguire is. So even if this turns out to be false and she hasn’t yet said yes, I really don’t mind. After all, how hard can it be to don a wig and kiss Maguire upside down?
