Kevin Spacey Talks Facebook Movie ‘The Social Network’

Kevin Spacey

Last month came news of a movie being made charting the creation of Facebook, the social network that has become a truly worldwide phenomenon. Aaron Sorkin has written a script titled The Social Network based on The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich, who also wrote 21.

Kevin Spacey is producing the new movie, and recently spoke to MTV about The Social Network while promoting Shrink, his latest Hollywood flick. He revealed how he doubts he’ll be appearing in the film in any way but is excited at the prospect of turning this fascinating story in to a movie.

On rumors surrounding the casting of Facebook supremo Mark Zuckerberg:

“I can’t imagine anyone’s read for it because we haven’t really announced the director — have we announced the director? — no, we haven’t announced the director yet. So I don’t think anyone’s read for it. Maybe in their fantasy they’ve auditioned for it.”

On the progress of the project:

“We’re at a very early stage. But I think it’s on the fast track. I think the film — they want to do it and maybe even do it this year. So it’s gonna happen. But I have no clue as to who may be in it, because ultimately that will be [up to] the director.”

On his thoughts regarding the film:

“Great story for people that don’t really know how it happened. Very filmic, very modern, very cool.”

I actually share Spacey’s enthusiasm for this project rather than share Kirsten’s earlier stated pessimism that this will be worth watching. The story of how Facebook came to be, from its early life as a college-only project by a couple of students to the global property it is now, could be fascinating in the right director’s hands. So I guess it depends who the director is in the end.
