If you’re not aware of the phenomenon of air guitar then you clearly need educating. Once learned, the art of air guitar stays with you forever, and makes games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero expensive wastes of time and money.
In essence, air guitar is the art of playing an imaginary guitar, or quite literally thin air. But there’s more to it than that, with none of your boring standing still strumming-style guitar playing on display here. Air guitar is a spectator sport because of the range of moves and styles on display.
In 2006 there was a comedy-documentary, Air Guitar Nation, and a book, To Air Is Human. That led to the idea of a movie based on the competitive world of air guitar. Air Guitar was developed at DreamWorks but is now at Paramount.
According to the Risky Business blog, Justin Theroux, writer/director/producer and all-round good guy, will produce the pic alongside Barry Josephson. He hasn’t, as yet, committed to either acting in or directing Air Guitar though.
The concept may seem silly but having watched the Air Guitar Championship and appreciated the talent on display, I think this movie is genius. It’ll likely be niche and very geared towards males, but it should also rock.
