Judd Apatow: ‘Pineapple Express 2′ Yes, ‘Superbad 2′ No… Probably

Judd Apatow is the genius behind such classic comedy films as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, Anchorman, and Pineapple Express. But sequels don’t really figure in his way of film-making, unfortunately.
In an interview with MTV Movies, Apatow spoke about the possibility of sequels to a couple of his most famous and most successful films. Apparently, Pineapple Express 2 is likely but don’t hold your breath waiting for Superbad 2.
Apatow said:
“I can’t get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to make the ‘Superbad’ sequel. I begged, but they don’t want to ruin it. They think it’s a gem of a movie and they don’t want a crappy second.”
“There’s a little talk about a ‘Pineapple Express’ sequel if that’s your cup of tea… your bowl of smoke. You probably have a better shot of seeing that [than any ‘Superbad 2′ or any other Apatow sequel].”
I have mixed feelings on this. Rogen and Goldberg are correct when they describe Superbad as “a gem of a movie” but does that necessarily rule out a sequel? A second film could certainly work, especially if enough time was spent on the screenplay. So why not?
I’d certainly rather see Superbad 2 than Pineapple Express 2. But maybe that’s just me. Anchorman 2 definitely looks to be happening but Apatow only produced rather than directed the original so I’m not sure whether that would count as an Apatow sequel or not.
