Joss Whedon Set for “The Avengers 2″

Joss Whedon is ready to play Captain America as well as write and direct "The Avengers 2."

Do you remember how it seemed like it took forever for Joss Whedon to confirm that he was directing “The Avengers?” It was practically in production before he said he was in. Well, no such mystery for the sequel–Marvel Studios has already come to an agreement with Whedon to write and direct “The Avengers 2.”

This wasn’t a lock, by any means. First off, I didn’t know if Whedon was a sequel kind of guy–some people don’t like to feel as if they’re repeating themselves or worry about getting locked into something. To give weight to that argument, at Comic-Con Whedon said he was still undecided about whether he’d be involved in the sequel (Deadline says “of course no one believed him,” but hey, I did–sometimes people are just indecisive). Never mind, though, he’s in.

Here’s what Marvel had to say about it:

“Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”

No official date has been announced for “The Avengers 2,” but based on what we do know of Marvel’s calendar, it would have to be 2015 at the earliest.  As part of his deal, Whedon will also develop a TV series using Marvel characters.
