It may have taken years to put the project together, but now that Tim Burton’s Alice In Womderland is finally getting under way, the director is keen to fill the cast with all of his favourites. No sign of Burton’s wife Helena Bonham-Carter as of yet, with Australian actress Mia Wasikowska playing the titular Alice instead.
However, Depp is apparently on board, with The Sun reporting that he will play The Mad Hatter in the latest (and hopefully greatest) film adaptation of the Lewis Carroll novel.
If this is true, and it does only seem to be an unfounded rumour at the moment, it’ll be the seventh time the pair have teamed up, with Edward Scissorhands being the first time they collaborated, and Sweeney Todd being the most recent.
A source told the tabloid newspaper:
“Tim has had designs on Alice In Wonderland since before he was famous. He has a knack for turning what seem like stories for just kids into gripping, spooky fables loved just as much by adults.”
“He’s held out on doing Alice till he got a big enough budget. Now this film is financed by Disney so money won’t be a problem.”
Production on the film is set to start next year, with a summer 2010 release date being eyed up. I was already looking forward to this adaptation, but if Depp really is playing The Mad Hatter then it becomes a must see. Is there any part Depp can’t play?
