Johnny Depp Revealed: More Public Enemies Photos

Depp Dillinger 1

The well-dressed 1930s gangster never robbed a bank without a nifty fedora.

Think of the last few roles you’ve seen Johnny Depp play–Sweeny Todd, Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka. What do they have in common? If you answered fright wigs and lots of makeup, then I wish you would stop using your masterful psychic powers to invade my brain and spy on me.

But now here comes Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, where Depp plays famed gangster John Dillinger (how famed? Let’s just say that Depression Era folks hated the bankers more than the bank owners; when Dillinger appeared in newsreels, audiences cheered.)? It’s set in the early 1930s, when facial hair was out and hats were in. So when you look at these costumes, it’s hard not to think about, as CHUD blogger Russ points out, how long it’s been since we’ve seen Johnny’s face. He looks good, in fact a lot better than the real Dillinger, but oh well, can’t have everything. He also looks really young. If they do 21 Jump Street: The Movie, they could set it back in 1987 and Johnny could still play Officer Tom Hanson with no more aid than an extra helping of hair gel.
