Oh God.
And here’s something for the “Things We Do Not Really Need” category.
Variety says that Universal in in talks with Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel (“Hot Tub Time Machine”) about writing a sequel to the long ago Jim Carrey hit, “Bruce Almighty”(2003). The original film, which co-starred Jennifer Aniston, earned $484 million worldwide.
Wow, you say to yourself, when a movie made that much money, shouldn’t it already have had a sequel? Why yes, it did–”Evan Almighty” (2007), starring Steve Carell as a character he played in the first movie, now taking center stage. Of course that movie cost lots and lots of money to make and didn’t earn much. Obviously, the word “Almighty” was not as much of a box office draw as expected.
So now apparently suspecting that it was the word “Bruce” all along that audiences truly loved, Universal seems to be willing to give the concept–an ordinary guy is given a chance to have the power of God–another whirl. That and the studio seems to have just abandoned all original ideas.
No details, other than that Jim Carrey seems willing to return to the role. Oh, and I think we can be sure the budget won’t be anything even close to “Evan’s” reported $175 million cost.
