Jason Segel and Emily Blunt (maybe) Join Jack Black “Gulliver” Film

Emily Blunt had no idea she’d made a deal with the Devil back when she made “Prada.”
Remember back in November when it was announced that Jack Black was starring in a new version of Daniel DeFoe’s 18th century classic novel, “Gulliver’s Travels?” Well, now a little more info is coming out–Variety says that would be (as this post’s title announced…I give too much away) that Jason Segel and Emily Blunt are joining the cast (we’ll get to that “maybe” in a minute).
Rob Letterman is directing and Nicholas Stoller wrote the very loose adaptation of DeFoe’s novel. Instead of being about an 18th c. man who lands in a number of different lands after several shipwrecks (talk about unlucky), with each land making a satirical point about contemporary society, this version will star Black as ”Lemuel Gulliver, a travel writer who takes an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle and washes up on the island of Lilliput, where he’s a giant among the tiny population.” Blunt has been cast as a Lilliputian princess, who will play Black’s love interest; Segel will play Horatio, a Lilliputian who becomes Gulliver’s wee best friend.
Now here’s the deal with Blunt–when she made “The Devil Wears Prada,” she signed a contract that gave Fox an option on a future film for them. This, apparently, would be that film. However, Blunt has also just been cast as the Black Widow in “Iron Man 2.” Her people (don’t you love people who have people?) are trying to work out a schedule that will let her do both movies, but they’re filming pretty much at the same time, with “Gulliver” in England and “Iron Man 2″ in the US. If she has to choose, the contract from “Prada” will force her to take the “Gulliver” role. I don’t know about you, but if I were Blunt I’d be really upset because I’d damn sure rather do “Iron Man 2″ than work on “Gulliver,” which so far sounds like an unpromising mess of a film.
