The action comedy pairing of martial arts legend Jackie Chan and that other guy, sorry, Chris Tucker, is reuniting again, but this time it won’t be for another Rush Hour movie. It seems the third instalment of the insanely popular franchise is going to be the last, with both stars keen to move on to something new.
MTV Movies recently spoke to Jackie Chan about the difficulties he had in meshing schedules with Jet Li for long enough to film The Forbidden Kingdom, and he casually dropped in to conversation that he and Tucker have shaken hands on a new movie.
“Nowadays, you need a middleman to push things; in the old days, we didn’t need a push from a middleman,”
“It’s like two days ago when Chris Tucker called me. We sat down and decided we want to do another movie. Not a ‘Rush Hour’ — something new.”
“I said yes, and after I shook [Tucker’s] hand, I said: ‘Look, we need a middleman. I don’t want to shake hands, then I go back to Hong Kong and you stay here, I get busy and you get busy.’ You have to have somebody in the middle to follow up, otherwise it will never happen.
“We’ve just agreed to do it, now we’re looking for the writer.”
The film is yet to exist though, and has no title, lot or director. Whether Rush Hour mastermind Brett Ratner will have anything to do with the new project is also unknown, although Chan did express his displeasure at how long the sequels took to come together.
“We finished ‘Rush Hour 1,’ and it was six years later that we made ‘Rush Hour 2′, and then six years later we made ‘Rush Hour 3.’ It’s too long!”
For Chan, who grew up making many films each year in the Hong Kong movie industry, Hollywood must seem very slow paced. However, I’m just pleased the partnership is staying together, as the two definitely have bags of on screen chemistry. They’re the new Laurel and Hardy.
