It’s Batman 3, Got that? 3, NOT 7: Bale Talks More Caped Crusader

Batman Cape

Hmmm…if I sign up for a third movie, can I keep the cape?

In an interview with EW, Christian Bale lets slip that he’s into the idea of more Batman, saying:

”Knowing the Dark Knight story, I would like very much to complete a trilogy. And I think that knowing the story of The Dark Knight, it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third. Now, the question would be: Is Chris going to be doing it? Because to me I find it tricky to imagine working on it without it being a collaboration with Chris.”

See, those last two sentences are the important part. It’s no surprise that the studio would want to do another movie. Batman Begins was, if not a monumental blockbuster, certainly a solid success, and the buzz around The Dark Knight makes it seem likely that the second film will outpace the first. But sometimes it’s hard to get an actor, especially one who already has an established career outside the superhero franchise, to sign on for another. If Bale is already interested, then that’s a good sign. Now, as he said, it’s just a matter of getting director Christopher Nolan on board.

The best part of this portion of the interview was when the interviewer, upon broaching the idea of another Batman sequel for Bale, suggested that the next one would be Batman 7, rather than Batman 3. To which Bale replied quickly:

No, no, no, no, no. [Smiling] Part 3 is what I’d consider it, yeah, I don’t say part 7. Batman begins — that was the beginning there, with all due respect to the others. We are re-creating this.”

Apparently, for some reason, Bale doesn’t want his movies associated with the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger dressed like a giant ice cube tray and the famous George Clooney nipple suit.

Busy Mr. Bale also noted that the Terminator script is currently in progress and next week, he’ll begin filming his role in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. Keep up the good work, Christian, and maybe someday we’ll forget Newsies.
