Which tiresome celebrities will be booked to do the voices for a Bioshock movie?
Rumor has it that a big screen adaptation of the hit game Bioshock is in the works. Joystiq is reporting that a “reliable source within a major studio” is in talks to put the game up on the big screen.
In Bioshock, Jack (the character being played by the player), a survivor of an ocean plane crash, finds his way to Rapture, an underwater city conceived as a utopia. As often happens with utopias, though, things have gone horribly wrong and society has collapsed into chaos. The game received fantastic reviews upon its release, has won numerous awards, and has been a big seller.
According to the Joystiq report, if the game does become a movie, it would be done like 300, the full green screen treatment.
I’m not sure what the intent of something like this is, because isn’t the appeal of playing a game largely based on the fact that you’re in control and you’re making decisions for the characters? If it’s a movie, it becomes a more passive experience. At that point you have to rely on the filmmakers and hope that they can somehow expand the story and bring something to it that you’re not getting from the game. So I guess I mean if you’re going to make this a movie, you better have more of an idea for it than “this is a really cool setting and I think we can recreate the imagery on a large scale in a really awesome way.”

While I am always skeptical about generally horrible video game to film adaptation, I have to say that Bioshock’s story and Rapture could be translated into an amazing film. The world is deep and rather complex. With a good script and visionary director of the likes of Alfonso Cauron or Guillermo del Toro could make for a brilliant film. I’m not too excited about the whole film being shot in green screen, but I’m aware how expensive it would be to try recreating Rapture with conventional methods.
