Indiana Jones $25 million Opening Day

Indiana Jones $25 million Opening Day

We knew the opening of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was going to big, and that has indeed proved the case with the film reportedly having managed a £25 million opening Thursday. While that is top notch, it doesn’t come anywhere close to matching the $50 million taken by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith on it’s opening day.

According to Deadline Hollywood, up to this morning (Saturday) the film had managed $56 million at the box office in the US, with a further $60 overseas, making a two day opening total of $116 million. Guesstimates are now being made for a US opening 5 day weekend total of between $140 and $175 million.

This would put it on a par with the best five day openings of all time, with the top 3 currently being Sith with $172.8M, Spider-Man 3 with $169.4M, and Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End with $160.8M.

The film was already a guaranteed hit but I didn’t expect it to do quite this well. The mixed reviews which the film received prior to opening on general release were mixed to say the least, but that obviously hasn’t put any of the legions of fans of the original trilogy off going to see what Lucas and Spielberg could do with the franchise 20 years later.

The reviews are still coming in thick and fast and there’s a definite divide over those who love it and those who hate it. The general consensus amongst the naysayers seems to be criticisms of too much CG, a general level of impossibility to many scenes and a preposterously unbelievable ending. We’ll be exploring all of these in our own review, coming right up.
