“Independence Day” Trilogy? Emmerich Says Two Sequels Are Possible

In “Independence Day,” the aliens lost. What could possibly happen next?
Wow, awkward–I just gave away the whole story in the title of this post. But, please, read on. I come bearing quotes.
Master of Disaster (or at least Destroyer of Things Using CGI) Roland Emmerich is out doing publicity for tomorrow’s “2012,” and while talking to MTV, the subject of a sequel to his huge hit “Independence Day” came up. Emmerich says:
“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc…”‘Independence Day’ was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”
(Isn’t the idea of an American president as a king the complete opposite of the intentions of the actual Independence Day? I’m just saying.)
Emmerich says that if they were to proceed, Will Smith would be involved (presumably Smith knows about this), and that the story would “just continue where it ended.” Cool, we’d get a chance to flashback to mid-90s fashions, which I can’t quite remember. Also, Emmerich says it will stay on Earth–no Smith traveling to save another planet (unless, presumably, Smith, who is now one of the biggest box office draws in the world says an interplanetary story is a dealbreaker).
This must be on its way to happening. Emmerich even has titles ready: “”ID4-ever,’ Part I and II maybe?” he suggested.”
Okay! I may be in the minority, but I don’t feel a crying need to have a sequel to “Independence Day.” It’s a fun, summer popcorn movie, but it’s not like the credits rolled and I felt like, “Wow, what happens next?” But maybe it’s just me.
“2012″ is in theaters on Friday.
