Ice Cube To Star In And Produce ‘Janky Promoters’ - He Also Wrote It!

Ice Cube may have stated off as a rapper in notorious gangster rap group NWA before moving on to have a solo hip hop career, but it seems he is now a hot property in the world of movies too.

I know the Friday series of films was pretty successful, but it’s still a surprise for me to hear that Dimension Films were so keen to secure his next movie, that they sought a pre-emptive deal with him.

According to Variety, the film in question is Janky Promoters, a movie about music promoter (well duh), who “get the chance to book a top-tier hip-hop artist into a midsized California venue. The pair are ill equipped for such a task and everything goes wrong.”

Cube has already penned the script, and will also star in an produce the movie. A director is currently being sought, although if Ice Cube thinks he could do it, I’m sure he’d probably manage to pull it off.

Dimension boss Bob Weinstein said:

“This feels a lot like ‘Uptown Saturday Night’ to me, a caper film where you have these music promoters who are slightly shady but are good enough guys that you root for them. This is going to be R-rated, and it appeals right to the core of Cube’s audience.”

“He’s producing the movie, sharing in the funding, so it’s more complicated than previous deals we’ve made with Cube. He’s a brand, like Tyler Perry, and that’s the direction he’s headed in. We’re happy to assist him in that because we believe in him.”

Ice Cube is rapidly turning himself in to a big player in Hollywood, a situation I could never have envisioned when I first saw him on Boyz n The Hood way back in 1991. Good luck to him I say.
