Harry Potter Cast Discuss Last Two Films - Romantic Comedy Before Dark?

With all seven of the books in the Harry Potter series out there, fans already know exactly what to expect from the last two films, currently being made in Leavesden Studios in England.

We’ve had the fifth film, and are just waiting to see how the writers, directors and producers bring our recollections of the last two books to the big screen.

The Edmonton Sun spoke to the three main actors, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, who play Harry, Hermione, and Ron respectively, to see what they thought about the remaining films, and how they thought the series would end up.

First up was Radcliffe, who revealed he’s more a fan of the darker elements of the series, and not so big a fan of the lighter, romantic elements:

“We’ve got a long haul ahead of us!”

“I think the script’s great and I think it’s going to be a really great film. But I’m just one of those people that, in what I’m doing, I always lean toward the dark side and I really enjoy doing the dark stuff.”

“I know Emma and Rupert really, really like the lighter stories and all that. And Rupert particularly is really going to have a field day on this, because he’s got fantastic comic timing and he’ll be able to use all of that to great effect on this film with his relationship with Lavender Brown.”

“(But) I’m actually going to miss doing all the morbid stuff, I think. [The seventh film], That’s the one last hurrah, that film. That’s going to be great. I really am very, very excited about the whole thing. It’s going to be epic, I hope.”

Watson meanwhile took the opportunity to talk her character, and the role she’ll play, up. Watson thought long and hard before signing up to play bookworm Hermione Grainger in the final two films, but seems to have persuaded by the strong role she has to play in the final storyline:

“I think Hermione has a massive part to play in Harry’s success. She teaches him that the only way of defeating Voldemort is through trusting his friends and having his friends (at his side). Cutting himself off from them makes him vulnerable because he has more to lose but less (vulnerable) because he has more to fight for and they can help him through it.”

Grint had his usual care free demeanour, and confirmed Radcliffe’s thoughts on the fact he’d enjoy the romantic scenes he’s due to share playing Ron with Lavender Brown:

“Every film has its own sort of atmosphere,” says Grint. “This one, it’s really, really cool. I’m looking forward to this one. It’s got sort of a dark undertone to it because Voldemort is back and that is quite a scary time for them. But there are some really cool bits in it. Ron gets a girlfriend in it, so that’s going to be quite cool.”

Being a big Harry Potter fan myself, I can’t wait to see the next two films come to life as big budget movies. I’m just hoping they don’t manage to screw them up. I’m confident they won’t as although I think some have been better than others, they’ve all had their good points, and been quite true to the books they’re based on.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is due out on November 21st 2008, with the wrap up of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, due out in 2010.
