Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the New Release Date

Good news! With a July release date, you kids won’t have to huddle around a fire to keep warm.
Did you have Thanksgiving plans that included a visit to the local multiplex to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? If so, sorry! You’ll have to find another excuse to get away from the relatives for a while–Variety is reporting that the release date for the film has been shifted from November 21, 2008, to July 17th, 2009.
Supposedly Warner Brothers felt that post-writers strike, its summer schedule was looking a little thin, with no blockbusters outside of Terminator Salvation. So HP and the H-BP is being moved to hold down the summer fort. Its main competition that July weekend will be Will Ferrell’s comedy, Land of the Lost.
Again, I’ll mention that it’s a sad comment on the state of the industry that only two times per year–late fall/early winter and summer–are considered suitable for a big movie release. Would a Harry Potter movie, with its built in audience, lose that much money if it opened in March? I really don’t think so. Plus the studio runs a risk of too much time passing between Harry Potter films/books. While the aforementioned hardcore crowd will be there whenever the movie opens, the more time that passes between the release of the last HP book and film, the more the fervor will dim.
Oh well, this much money in, I’m sure no one’s fortune’s are teetering on this movie making $89 or 85 million its first weekend. No matter when it’s released, it’ll make money. And as for that wanting to see a movie in March thing? Rent a video.

Well, with America killing off the entertainment industry in apparent stages, as they have no real use for it, it seems like a typical and expected move.
