Green Lantern Meets Superman…And Who Would That Be?

Let’s just let him cast Clark Kent.
Doesn’t it seem like we’ve heard about Green Lantern and Green Hornet movies for about forever? I think the Green Hornet one is finally set to start shooting sometime in the new year (well, we will see about that). And MTV’s Splash Page has an interview with Marc Guggenheim, one of the writers of the Green Lantern movie, thus giving some proof that that’s actually in progress.
Guggenheim is writing along with Michael Green and Greg Berlanti (who won the directing job). He says they’re on a third draft and also are talking to designers. As a writer, it’s not like Guggenheim’s going to get to decide that, but he can look:
“I’ll come over and drool [at the designs],” Guggenheim said. “I will say that the design work is truly mindblowing, and it’s hard to pick a favorite. But the shots on Oa are spectacular. What Oa looks like has never been seen on film.”
There’s no word yet on who would play the title role, but when asked about how they would handle casting a Clark Kent cameo, Guggenheim got to speculate somewhat gleefully:
“There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ‘Batman Begins’ as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne,” Guggenheim noted. “But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film.”
But as a self-proclaimed “sucker for a good Easter egg,” Guggenheim said, “The fanboy in me would love that. Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘The Hulk’ was awesome. I love that stuff in general, and I think the fans would enjoy it. Brandon Routh or even Tom Welling [in ‘Green Lantern’] would be awesome. And anything is possible. The beauty part of being the writer, though, is that I don’t actually have to make that judgment call.”
Ah yes, that is one of the great truisms of being a Hollywood screenwriter: “with no power comes no responsibility.”
Personally, I think it would be kind of fun to have someone else do the Kent cameo rather than Routh or Welling. Besides, I’m never sold on either’s acting ability. Sure, it would just be a cameo, but sometimes those look the worst if they get screwed up.
