Two words you don’t usually expect to see associated with each other: “Best” and “Burlesque”…unless you’re the Hollywood Foreign Press Association!
Ahh, the Golden Globes…What words come to mind? Meaningless? Puzzling? Fluffy? (I kind of like that one.) Mysterious? (Hey…who IS the Hollywood Foreign Press Association…?) Some people think that the Globes are an Oscar indicator, but I don’t think the correlation is that strong, beyond years where there are prohibitive favorites.
The full list is below, but some notables–”True Grit,” completely shut out. Which seems odd, as the reviews have been pretty good–but not great. Still, in another year I think it would have made it based on the strength of the names involved. So you know what that means? This must be a pretty good year for movies. Or so it would seem.
The ludicrousness of the Globes is truly apparent in the Comedy/Musical categories. First, it’s hard to take anything seriously when the words “Best” and “Burlesque” appear in the same phrase, unless it’s “Best Comedy or Musical starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, and Stanley Tucci,” an always crowded category. And it appears that “The Tourist” was actually a comedy (well, I’m hoping it wasn’t supposed to be a musical). So that means it was even worse than we thought, because I don’t think I read one review where anyone noted laughing at anything…on purpose. Oh, wait, The Hollywood Reporter said that when they announced “The Tourist” as one of the Best Comedy or Musical nominees, “the press room erupted in laughter.” At last we have confirmed proof of one instance of people enjoying themselves at “The Tourist.”
