It may have taken 20 years for a fourth movie in the Indiana Jones series to turn up, but it’s looking likely we won’t have to wait quite so long for the fifth. In fact, it could be happening sooner than we all think.
The original trilogy of movies was phenomenally successful, but George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Harrison Ford knew when to go out on top. But when the chance presented itself for another film in the series, they all willingly signed up, and the result was the very mixed but ultimately brilliant Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. The title of the film may have been ridiculous, as was some of the plot, but it still turned out to be the best Indy film yet.
And now we could be about to get a fifth. In an interview with The LA Times, Ford claims that Lucas “is in think mode right now.” He added:
“It’s crazy but great,”
“It’s automatic, really, we did well with the last one and with that having done well and been a positive experience, it’s not surprising that some people want to do it again.”
If George Lucas is thinking anything, then it’s probably how many zeroes he could add to his bulging bank balance by inflicting another Indiana Jones movie on us. But, as cynical as I may be over the motives behind it, I’d still go and see it, and probably love every minute. Unless of course there’s a fridge being nuked again.
Indiana Jones is certainly a character that could endure the test of time. While Harrison Ford may be getting a bit too long in the tooth to keep swinging his way through adventures, there’s a ready made replacement waiting in the wings in the form of Shia LaBeouf. What are the chances of Mutt Williams and The Desperate Sequel happening I wonder?

Skulls was the best Indy yet? What? I don’t know anyone who thinks that. Let me get some of what you are smoking.
FOR GODSAKE!! This is the best Indy movie? Are you Insane? Why is the best???
ok, it? a Indy movie, it was… just ok. But please, it’s only good thing was the revenue it got. Just because loads of people were excited to see the next movie of indy, and I, personally, found a crappy film. It was more interesting the last order or the ark of alliance. Even the Fate of Atlantis, as a game, was much better…
You should see the latest South Park episode titled ‘China probrem’. The point is… you can’t make a sequel to Indy when you have already raped him in the last try…
Indy 4 was the most humiliating and distressful experience I ever had in a movie theater. El Spielbergo has finally gone out of his mind and money seems to be his ultimate goal… ironically.
crystal skull is by far the worst of the four indy movies. everyone I have spoken to agrees with that. I really felt it did not make justice to the original trilogy at all, sorry.
The only reason anyone should consider an Indy 5 is as an APOLOGY for crystal skull. This movie wasn’t just bad for an Indy movie, it was just AWFUL period. Imagine if this was the first of the series?! Ford would retire out of shame. Shia would run back to the disney channel with wimpy facial hair in tow, Spielberg would be reduced to cannes films and lucas would resort to building his own spaceship and blasting off to the lunatic world he came from.
If they do it, do it right;
NO CGI!! it’s been the death of the film industry’s soul
NO stupid plots that have to drop hints all the way through to prepare the audience for the end and it STILL sucks out of shear ridiculousness.
MAKE IT REAL. thats why the originals were so good. the artifacts may not have existed but the clues and plot seemed real enough that the audience forgets they’re watching a movie and just enjoys the story. why can’t anyone make movies like that anymore?
What I think the writer was trying to say is that Crystal Skull is the biggest money earner in the series, if we don’t take inflation or video/dvd sales into account. Any sane person couldn’t mean Crystal Skull is the best in the series when taken in the context of pure entertainment. While I enjoyed Crystal Skull, it really didn’t delivery what it should have. And seeing we fans waited so long it should have. The whole alien things is old hat. Spielberg has done enough alien movies. Lucas has also created a whole fantasy world full of aliens. Why bring them to an Indy adventure? To me that’s just laziness. Spielberg and Lucas can contact me anytime to help them with ideas and scriptwriting.
Okay, WHAT!!! Why are there so many comments above me that don’t like this movie! I agree here with the author as the best Indy film. I really liked Indy 3 also. I’m a pretty huge Indy fan and love this new movie! It’s the first one I saw in Blue ray so that part was cool yet a little distracting at times cuz I was noticing all the details haha. But I loved the whole plot with the other dimensional creatures. I mean the Indy movies have always had mystical objects and some fantasy/sci-fi elements in them and this just continues it in a great way. In my opinion this was better than the originals and continues to be a great series! (not including the tv series some of those episodes were just not very good)
I’m really hoping for an Indy 5. I’m really loving what they are doing with this.
I’m sorry, anyone who actually LIKED this Indy 4 movie as an Indiana Jones film, is not a fan of Indiana Jones. My favorite Indy film was the Last Crusade and this movie came nowhere near that or ANY of the original Indy films. This film couldn’t even be considered better than any and all of the Indy novels or games made before it. This film was just ridiculous!
If they make a 5th one, it’s got to be an apology like Ryan said. Personally, I think they already have the perfect story, but the problem is Lucas didn’t think it up, so it’s not going to happen, but the story I’m thinking of is Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine. It’s set in the 50′s, it’s got Commis, it’s got a cool and mysterious artifact that few people are familiar with, it’s got great locales and best of all, it’s got like 3 main characters tops, not 10 like Indy 4! They could even change a few things in order to fit it in better with Indy 4, make it a prequel like Temple of Doom was to Raiders, and maybe include the new head of the school to become more familiar with his character, and the guy that defended Indy at the beginning of Indy 4 when the government stooges were accusing Indy of being a commi. It all works and what’s better is that the final enemy in Infernal Machine sets up for Indy 4 PERFECTLY, explaining why the government is so “interested” in Indy’s motives!
—The question is —HOW LONG will Lucas et al keep secret the
disgrace of their bottomless sell-out and suck-up to the most
awesomely genocidal regime in ALLL human history
—across the Pacific?
-Anything for those vast market favors —eh boys?
—-ANYTHING!
AMEN
