Gareth Evans Goes From “The Raid” To “Breaking the Bank”

If they don't get a real MMA fighter to play Lightning Murray, then maybe Chris Evans?

Gareth Evans made quite an impression at Sundance this year with his Indonesian action film “The Raid: Redemption.” After that debut, what would he do next?

Ahh, glad you asked! Deadline reports that Evans will direct “Breaking the Bank,” a true crime story based on the book “Heist: The True Story of the World’s Biggest Cash Robbery,” by Howard Sounes, and “Breaking the Bank,” an article by L. Jon Wertheim that appeared in Sports Illustrated. The project came out of a deal between XYZ Films and Time Inc. to develop films from Time’s stable of magazines, one of which is SI.

It’s the story of “Lighting” Lee Murray, a mixed martial arts street fighter who organized the world’s largest cash robbery in England in 2006. Darren Aronofsky was originally attached to direct, but is a little busy with “Noah.” Kerry Williamson wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay.

I bet they’re going to get a real MMA star to play the lead, don’t you think? Too bad it’s not a female, then Gina Carano could have another job.
