Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’ - Remake Of The 1920s Dystopian Movie Approaches

Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is a classic piece of cinema, which at the time was the most expensive movie ever produced. Made in 1928, the silent film told of a bleak future where wealthy people live a life of luxury above the earth, while an underclass struggle to eke out an existence below ground.

It was originally set in 2027, and with just 20 years left until we reach that date, the film is looking more and more like reality than ever.

Which has prompted the idea of a remake, with producer Thomas Schuehly acquiring the rights to update the sci-fi classic for a whole new generation of fans. He told Variety:

“With the overwhelming role technology plays in our daily lives, the growing gap between rich and poor, including the gradual elimination of the middle class, the story of ‘Metropolis’ is a frightening reflection of our society that takes place in an all too possible not too distant future.”

There may be a lot of you reading this who have never seen Metropolis, but you will certainly have seen one of the many movies which it has inspired throughout the last 80 years of cinema. 2001, The Matrix, and Blade Runner all immediately spring to my mind.

Schuehly is currently searching for the right director for the project, and a final decision is expected to be made in the next few months.

  • […] Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis’ - Remake Of The 1920s Dystopian Movie Approaches Dear lord why? (tags: film classic) No tag for this post. […]

  • Why? Because this is perhaps the most insightful, prescient and best made SF films before “2001.” With the themes explored in the film, and the opportunity to update the special effects, no film deserves a remake more than this one. Why remake “King Kong”, or even bother with Episodes 1 and 2 of “Star Wars”? At least “Metropolis” has a message and a warning.
