Things must be going well over on the set of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” because we have new from Deadline that the director of that film, Francis Lawrence, is signing on to direct the last two films in the series, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” parts 1 and 2.
The first film in the trilogy of books by Suzanne Collins, “The Hunger Games,” has earned about $700 million worldwide since its release last March. Gary Ross, the director of that film, declined to return for the second film, “Catching Fire,” and Lawrence stepped in. That film is set to be released on November 22, 2013. “Mockingjay Part 1″ will be released on November 21, 2014, and “Mockingjay Part 2″ is due in theaters on November 20, 2015.
The biggest challenge with “Mockingjay,” I think, is that it’s a tiny book; it’s not being split into two parts because it’s a massive tome, like “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” or “Breaking Dawn.” It’s just being split up to make more money.
Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen, who will continue to lead her rebellion in “Mockingjay.” Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth co-star.
