First Preview Of ‘The Dark Knight’ - Batman and Ledger’s Joker Revealed

A small crowd in New York were lucky enough to preview the first six minutes of the new Batman film The Dark Knight on Monday, and it seems it left everyone wanting more.

The eagerly awaited sequel to Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan, feature Christian Bale as Batman, and Heath Ledger as a new, meaner looking Joker.

I always kind of liked Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the uber villain, as in I liked him… not the best reaction for people to have toward an evil character in a film. This Ledger version on the other hand scares me already, and I’ve only seen a few early release promo shots.

The opening sequence of the film acts as an extended trailer, filmed in the IMAX format, and will be shown before I Am Legend, in cinemas from December 14th.

Nolan explained to MTV:

“In the finished film, there will be four or five IMAX sequences,”

“Everything about doing this in the IMAX format is trying to get that feeling back when I was a little kid when I’d sit in a movie theater and see images that were larger than life. That’s what I’m trying to get back to with this material. I felt like introducing the Joker in this way because he’s such a huge character [and it] would be a very fun thing to do.”

“Some of them are actually quiet scenes which pictorially we thought would be interesting. It’s not all the slam-bam scenes.”

Nolan also spoke about the nature of the story, and the strength of the characters. It seems that not only will Batman be more sure of himself in the new movie, the Joker we get to see is fully formed and absolute.

Everything I see about this film, from the promo shots, to the evolving storyline, and all the notes from the production line in between, make me more and more excited about it. If this turns out to be a stinker, then I’ll eat my hat.

Filming wrapped two weeks ago, and is set to be in U.S. cinemas from July 18 2008.
