Disney has been trying to put Cinderella’s glass slipper on someone, and Emma Watson’s foot is the latest candidate. Oh, the rest of her would come along, too–Variety reports that Watson is in very early talks to play the title role in a new live version of the classic fairy tale (incidentally, the musical version is opening on Broadway this spring). Note that again–very, very early talks, as in Variety makes a point of saying, “She does not have the part yet.” Duly noted, Variety.
Kenneth Branagh is directing “Cinderella” with Cate Blanchett playing a rather stunning Evil Stepmother. If Blanchett can sell us on the idea that she’s envious of Watson in any way, then she should get an Oscar right now.
Watson co-starred last year in the well-received “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” This year she’ll be seen in Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” (which I think filmed about two years ago) and does a bit in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s “This is the End.” Next year she’s in Darren Aronofsky’s epic “Noah.”
Production on “Cinderella” will start in the fall. We’ll see if it starts with Watson, or someone else.
