Variety tells us that Dominic Cooper is in negotiations to join the cast of “Need for Speed.” Aaron Paul and Imogen Poots are already set to star in the adaptation of the popular video game franchise. Scott Waugh will direct.
(True confession: when I heard that Aaron Paul had been cast in a movie with the title “Need for Speed,” I just assumed that he was playing a drug addict. Hey, considering his meth dealer’s role “Breaking Bad,” and his alcoholic turn in “Smashed,” it just made sense, right? Wrong.)
The film isn’t based on any particular iteration of the popular video game franchise, but is set in the game’s universe. George Gatins wrote the script from a story he developed with John Gatins (I assume they’re related…?). Here’s how it’s described:
Story follows an underground racecar driver (Paul) who owns a garage that modifies expensive cars to make them faster for racing. Framed and sent to prison when his best friend is murdered during a race, he seeks revenge upon his release.
Cooper will play the other male lead of Dino, an ex-NASCAR driver who uses his connections to the wealthy to create a business rebuilding and modifying supercars. Imogen Poots, who starred in DreamWorks’ “Fright Night” remake, is making a deal to play an exotic car dealer who does business with Paul and Cooper.
Nothing worse than a vengeful mechanic.
Cooper was last seen in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” though judging by the box office, you probably didn’t. He has two films ready for release, “Summer in February” and “Dead Man Down,” and a number in pre-production: “My Dinner with Herve,” “Reasonable Doubt,” “November Man” and “Cities.”
“Need for Speed” is set for release on February 7, 2014.
