Dare we get our hopes up?
Well, I may have been struggling with getting online on a post-hurricane afternoon, but apparently Hollywood business has gone on without me. I finally get on, take a look at Deadline and guess what happened while I was away? Disney bought Lucasfilm and is planning a new “Star Wars” movie to be released in 2015.
First the sale part–now Disney owns Lucasfilm as well as Marvel, Pixar, ABC, ESPN, and probably some other properties I’m missing. So will cast members from the new “Star Wars” movie have to go on “Dancing with the Stars?” Will Darth Vader be the villain in a new Pixar movie? Can Thor smash Jar Jar Binks? I know, of course not to all of these (well, except that “Dancing with the Stars” one, watch out for that). It’s fun to speculate, though.
As for a seventh “Star Wars” movie, well, you know it won’t just be a seventh–I’m sure they must be planning a trilogy. Considering how many problems the last three had (meaning what is now referred to as Episodes 1-3), I should be pessimistic, but I actually see a ray of hope here–George Lucas won’t write or direct it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for all Lucas has contributed to the movie world over the last four decades, but as a director, well, I don’t think he could be less interested in working with actors and as a writer he leaves something to be desired. With the latter, I mean that he’s not good at writing dialogue–there are some really clunky lines in those last three movies. His real genius is as an ideas man, and even a story man. But writing the actual script…I think Disney can find someone a little bit smoother. And by the way, it wouldn’t be a terrible idea if they would adapt some stories from the highly successful book series. I know, pretty unlikely.
So how’s that for an eventful afternoon?
