Johnny Depp, stumped by the question, “What is Rango?”
Variety reports that Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp are working together again…in a non-Pirates of the Caribbean project. Depp will be providing the voice for the main character in an animated film called Rango. John Logan is writing the script, based on an idea by Verbinski, who will direct.
Hey, what’s Rango about and what will Johnny be doing? Variety answers your question:
“Depp will voice the lead character, a household pet that goes on an adventure to discover its true self.”
Wait a second, “a household pet?” They don’t even know what kind of pet? A cat? A dog? A rabbit? A hamster? A ferret? An iguana? A snake? A rock? A hat? An amorphous imaginary creature? And “its true self?” Its?!! They don’t even know what gender the main character is? Does Johnny know this? Male? Female? Neutral? What is it, a German article? This is all very suspicious to me.
Although they don’t seem to know what kind of creature Depp is playing, they are certain about the animation. Verbinski says the cutting-edge animation techniques, courtesy of Industrial Light & Magic, will:
“allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature.”
You know, someday animation techniques are going to be so cutting-edge, they’re going to be live action.
Filming is set to begin in January, with a March 2011 release expected. Heavens to Murgatroyd, that’s awful far away. Who knows if movies will even exist then? In the meantime, Verbinski is continuing to work on an adaptation of the acclaimed video game Bioshock. Depp is preparing to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie (just kidding!!!!).
