The next Harry Potter movie, The Half Blood Prince is still months away, being set for release on November 21st. But, excitement is already building amongst the fans, with many anxious to see JK Rowling’s work brought to life on the big screen again. The cast and crew are adding to the excitment by giving away some titbits about what to expect.
Both director David Yates, and Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe have spoken to Empire, reported here via Digital Spy, and told of how the darker side of the book is set to explode on to the screen. Yates suggests the sixth instalment of the series will offer “sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll”, while Radcliffe suggested parallels between the film and British classic Trainspotting.
“There’s obviously no sex in the book, it’s all subtext, but there is a fair amount of sexual energy and there are some drug parallels.”
“We have a couple of what David calls our ‘Trainspotting moments’. That’s two films I never thought would be mentioned in the same breath… There’s a great balance. The light parts are lighter than before and the dark parts are extremely dark.”
Wow, Harry Potter and those themes don’t really go hand in hand, but it will be nice to see the evolution of Potter and the rest of the characters from children in to young adults. Meanwhile, Yates also promised a big action sequence to start the film off with.
“We’re opening with a big attack. Jo [Rowling] talks about it in the book, but we’re going to show it. We’ll bring a major London landmark crashing down. It should be quite spectacular.”
There are many, many films coming out between now and November that I want to go and see, but as a massive fan of the book series, this one stands out on my calendar like a sore thumb. Come October, I’ll probably read the book again to prepare for the film.
