Surreal World: Antonio Banderas as Salvador Dali?

According to Variety, Antonio Banderas is in talks to star in a biopic about Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dali. Simon West is set to direct. Jeremy Walters wrote the script.

The film will be a festival of multimedia. Variety says, “Film will blend music with CGI sequences in an effort to capture the inventiveness and color of the painter. Story will explore how Dali conquered America and the world with sex, sin and surrealism only to succumb later to worldwide scandal and misfortune.”

Sex, sin, and surrealism? Good heavens, don’t take grandma to see this one!

Two other biopics are on the way: Al Pacino (umm….no…) is starring in Dali and I: The Surreal Story, by Andrew Niccol. Robert Pattinson of soon-to-be Twilight fame plays the young Dali in Little Ashes, a film about Dali, Luis Bunuel, and Federico Lorca. There also was a weird rumor about Johnny Depp playing Dali in a film, but that doesn’t seem to have much traction. Nothing wrong with the idea of Depp playing Dali, but the people spreading the word/rumor seemed unprofessional.

Banderas seems like he would have a lot of fun with this part, though I’d like it more if he got to sing and dance in it. West is still probably best-known for directing the Lara Croft movies, which makes him seem like an odd choice for a biography of one of the 20th cenutry’s most famous artists. But I’m sure he must have some idea and some feel for the project…right?
