Crystal Skulls Explained: More Than Just Expensive Goth Jewelry

The official poster. Looking good, Dr. Jones.
I admit it, I love Indiana Jones, am looking forward to the movie, and therefore am just going to keep on scrounging for every bit of news I can find.
In addition to his recent statements about the new characters, producer Frank Marshall revealed a little more about the plot of the film to USA Today. First off, it’s now the Cold War, so bad guy Nazis are out, bad guy Soviets are in, notably Cate Blanchett as Agent Spalko. About her character, Marshall says, “Indy always has a love-hate relationship with every woman he ever comes in contact with.”
(Yikes! Indy has issues!)
Franklin says that 19 years after the end of the Last Crusade, Dr. Jones is living the quiet life of an academic when the new adventure surfaces. Indy is inspired to dust off the old whip and sets off on a journey that takes him (courtesy of our old friend, the map with the red line tracing his route) to New Mexico, Connecticut, Mexico City, and the jungles of Peru).
(Connecticut?! Be careful, Indy!)
As for the titular artifact, here’s the explanation:
The artifact of the title is inspired by real quartz sculptures of disputed origins that are carved in a way that defies the natural structure of the crystal.
“The theory is they are shaped by higher powers or alien powers or came from another world, or an ancient Mayan civilization had the powers,” Marshall says.
Okay, fine with me.
