It seems that rather than bask in the glory that was The Dark Knight, both in terms of box office success and how good a film it was, the fans have already moved on and are eyeing up the next Batman movie, the third in Chris Nolan’s trilogy. This has lead to intense speculation and rumor-mongering doing the rounds on the Internet about every aspect of the as-yet-unannounced Batman 3.
David Goyer, who wrote the screenplay for The Dark Knight debunked every single one of those rumors at the start of October, and now Chris Nolan himself has dared to talk about sequels. He spoke to MTV about the possibility of following up such a phenomenal film.
“Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?”
Not many. I hated Terminator 3 although I thought the third Die Hard was probably the best. The difference with Batman of course is that you know that the third film in this particular trilogy won’t be the last time we see the character, as there’ll no doubt be another set of Batman films made in a few years time. So does it actually matter if Nolan’s sequel isn’t the best?
The big problem is the huge standard set by The Dark Knight. Batman 3 could be awesome but will still likely be compared to this summer’s blockbuster, and not always favorably. But Nolan has got to make another one, surely? I think everyone who saw The Dark Knight wants a sequel, and even if it takes a few years to arrive, we’ll all wait patiently I’m sure.
