Casey Affleck to Star in Ben Affleck-Matt Damon Produced “Race to the South Pole”

Casey Affleck will spend some time in the snow.

Did I give away the whole story in the title of this post? I think so–according to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, that dynamic duo of the ’90s, are planning to produce “Race to the South Pole.” Peter Glanz will write the script about the true life attempt by two competing parties to be the first known humans to reach the South Pole.

Casey Affleck is set to star as Robert Falcon Scott, the British explorer, who led the group that set the benchmark for exploration disaster: they reached the Pole in January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian Roald Amundsen had gotten there in December 1911. Then to top it all off, every member of the Scott expedition died of starvation and exposure on the way back. Imagine that–going through all that hardship to find out it meant nothing, and then you die in vain. It’s a depressing story made more depressing by the diaries Scott kept up to the end, detailing the group’s slow, painful deaths. The good news is that there must be a good part for an actor with the role of Amundsen!

Casey Affleck has two movies coming out in 2013–”Out of the Furnace” with Christian Bale and “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” with Rooney Mara and Ben Foster.
